County Down farming family wins UFU Winter Barley Competition

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU), along with Winter Barley competition sponsor Origin NI & BASF, is pleased to announce that Raymond, David & William Wilson from the UFU Ards Group, have been awarded first place in the 2026 UFU Winter Barley cereal competition.

Second place this year was awarded to Jonathan Hamilton from the UFU South Londonderry Group, and receiving a respectable third place was Sam Long Jnr and Sam Long Snr from UFU North Down Group.

The county winners were:

  • Antrim: Philip Crawford, Mid Antrim Group.
  • Armagh: Trevor McCartney, Armagh Down Group.
  • Down: Raymond, David and William Wilson, Ards Group.
  • Derry/Londonderry: Jonathan Hamilton, South Londonderry Group.
  • Tyrone: Jeffrey Mullan, South Tyrone Group.

UFU deputy president Clement Lynch said, “A massive well done to all our finalists, and thanks to everyone who played their part in making this year’s competition a success. It is the hard work, knowledge and commitment of our growers that makes the UFU cereals competition a highlight in the farming calendar year upon year.

“We take great pride in this competition and the opportunity it provides to showcase the outstanding quality of cereal crops produced across Northern Ireland. Despite the challenges each growing season can bring, our growers continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience, consistently producing crops of the highest standard.”

The awards for the Winter Barley, Oats, Winter Wheat and Spring Barley cereal competition categories will be officially presented at the 2026 UFU and sponsors Cereals Competition Awards and lunch planned for later this year.
