UFU poultry vice chair – Jonny Tuft

Jonny is a fourth-generation farmer, farming in Ballinderry, Co. Antrim with his father John, and his wife Roberta. They farm a mixed farm with beef cattle, sheep, arable and free-range broiler units.

Jonny has been a member of the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) for approximately eight years. He is currently vice chair of his local UFU group, South Antrim, as well as vice chair of the UFU poultry committee. He also sits on the UFU animal health and welfare committee. Jonny believes the UFU plays a vital role in supporting farmers, lobbying on behalf of farmers, and promoting the industry locally, nationally and internationally.

At present, the UFU poultry committee are striving for fair and consistent pricing for poultry farmers in Northern Ireland (NI), in both the egg and meat sectors. The UFU is also helping farmers with current planning permission issues, issues which have led to delays or prevention of business development and growth in the poultry sector. The UFU plays a key role in helping highlight the importance of good biosecurity on farms to prevent the spread of Avian Influenza in NI.
