The Ulster Farmers’ Union’s (UFU) hosted its first ‘Beyond the farm gate’ virtual farm tour of 2023 on Thursday 2 February with Randalstown dairy farmer Samuel Hill, coinciding with the UFU’s ‘Februdairy’ campaign. The virtual farm tour saw over 400 members register to hear from next generation member Samuel, who provided members with an insight into his farming practices and showcased the hard work and passion that goes into producing high quality produce for consumers to enjoy.
Samuel is a third-generation farmer from Randalstown, predominantly farming 400 dairy cows. Throughout the virtual farm tour, Samuel provided an honest insight into what practices work best on his farm such as genetics and calf rearing, discussed the issues facing the dairy sector at present and the importance of good business management during the current climate.
Feedback from viewers highlighted Samuel’s “upbeat and positive attitude for the dairy sector going forward and his support for women in agriculture” alongside his “very impressive set up, showcasing NI farming in such a positive way”. Samuel was a “great role model for young people interested in all aspects of agriculture” and told viewers how it is important to talk to individuals within the industry and members whether it may be through UFU meetings, CAFRE’s Business Development Group, Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster or local events, sharing knowledge and experiences to enhance the sector as a whole.
Keep an eye out for the UFU’s next virtual farm tour!
