Work ongoing to address pig production input costs

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) pork and bacon committee continue to highlight the current plight of the sector on a daily basis. Skyrocketing production costs are far beyond the price that pig producers are currently receiving, they’re experiencing massive losses like never before.

The committee are continuing to engage with all retailers and processors to try and secure a viable, financial solution to help sustain the pig sector as soon as possible. The UFU have stressed the seriousness of the situation, making it very clear that unless the price of pork products rises enabling farmers to receive a fairer return, NI will not have a pig production sector in the future.

Whilst initial signs show some rise in pig prices, these increases must be enhanced in order to save the industry. In a recent BBC article it states that ‘Tesco profits more than trebled last year’ making it very apparent that supermarket chains have the power to alleviate the pressure being put on primary food producers and they must do so urgently before the pig industry disappears.
