The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) have written to Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) welcoming the opportunity to respond to the Fruit and Vegetable Aid Scheme (FVAS) consultation, stating that the proposed changes will help support the continued growth of Northern Ireland’s horticulture sector.
UFU deputy president, Clement Lynch, said, “We welcome these proposed amendments as an enabler to retain, protect and develop the Producer Organisation model. It is important that the scheme continues to support Northern Ireland growers and provides the foundations for future growth within the horticulture sector.
“The UFU strongly reinforces that only Northern Ireland growers should benefit from support provided to Producer Organisations. The embedding of Article 32(1A) is of high importance and will help ensure DAERA is better positioned to support the local horticulture industry.”
The UFU back plans to update appeal provisions, modernise funding rules and introduce a more practical approach to inspections and scheme administration.
“Any new reporting requirements must deliver efficiencies and not create additional burdens for Producer Organisations. Clear guidance, effective communication and ongoing engagement with industry stakeholders will be essential as these changes are progressed.”
The UFU has urged DAERA to continue working closely with Producer Organisations, growers and wider industry representatives to ensure any future amendments are developed in partnership and support the long-term development of Northern Ireland horticulture.
