Robin Irvine takes BT cup at UFU annual dinner

More than 250 guests gathered at the Canal Court Hotel, Newry, for the Ulster Farmers’ Union annual dinner last night (27 March), where Robin Irvine was presented with the prestigious BT Cup for 2026.

The night was attended by officials such as fellow Union colleagues from around the UK, DAERA Minister, Andrew Muir, IFA President, Francie Gorman as well as a strong representation from the wider agriculture industry.

Offering a toast to agriculture, UFU president William Irvine said, “From all around the UK I hear the same message from farmers, we need Government to listen to us. They need to put the framework in that allows our farm families to grow and evolve and play their full part in feeding the nation.

“This debate is not about environment versus food. It’s about growing food in an environmentally sustainable way and improving the food security position in the UK.

“We are facing and will continue to face many challenges, but I see no reduction in the passion and ambition of our farmers to continue to farm. After all, locally produced food is not only the highest quality, but also the most environmentally friendly.”

Following addresses from NFU Scotland President, Andrew Connon and DAERA Minister, Andrew Muir, the prestigious BT Cup for outstanding agricultural achievement was awarded to Robin Irvine.

UFU chief executive, Conall Donnelly, said, “One of the most important moments in our annual dinner each year is the presentation of the Belfast Telegraph Cup, an award that recognises service, leadership and lasting impact within our agri-food industry.

“I am delighted to award Robin Irvine with the BT Cup in recognition of his exceptional and sustained contribution to the agri-food sector over more than four decades.

“Robin Irvine’s career is a model of dedication and leadership. From his early work with the Northern Ireland Hereford Breeders Association to serving as President of the UK Hereford Cattle Society, he has promoted excellence in breeding on a national and international level.

“Robin also built a distinguished career in the feed industry with John Thompson & Son and later leading Fane Valley Feeds as Managing Director, serving two terms as President of the Northern Ireland Grain Trade Association, and driving safety, sustainability and innovation across the sector,” continued Mr Irvine.

“Robin’s contribution has been far-reaching, practical and enduring. His service across a wide range of organisations, including AI Services, NIFCC, the King’s Hall and the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society, reflects not only his expertise, but his willingness to give back and help drive the industry forward.

Robin’s efforts have left a lasting mark on the agri-food industry, and we are proud to recognise that.”

The UFU presented two other awards on the night. The Mary Wilson Trophy for best overall UFU group performance in 2025 was presented to Mid Tyrone group office. This award recognises the group’s outstanding performance in membership recruitment, securing subscription income and their successful delivery of group meetings and social events throughout the year.

The Cuthbert Trophy was awarded to South West Fermanagh group office for retaining the highest percentage of their members in 2025. The dedication and commitment shown by the group managers and their staff over the year have enabled them to achieve a retention rate of 98 percent.
