The Ulster Farmers’ Union technical team has delivered a series of significant victories for its members, helping to overturn penalties, secure vital payments, and resolve disputes that impact farm businesses.
Among the recent successes, a £6,700 penalty for a late TB test was overturned on medical grounds following a carefully prepared appeal. This outcome not only saved the member a substantial fine but also highlighted the importance of expert representation in complex regulatory matters.
The UFU technical officer also successfully challenged the non-payment of a crucial Single Farm Payment, securing £23,000 for a member after a detailed appeal process. This recovery represents a significant financial boost for the farm concerned.
In addition, a young farmer’s appeal resulted in a £12,000 gain, underscoring the UFU’s commitment to supporting the next generation of farmers.
The UFU technical officer helped resolve a dispute with a telephone company, leading to the reinstatement of a landline after a payment disagreement. This resolved issue saved the member £300 and restored vital communication services.
Successfully addressed damage and access problems caused by BT engineers, ensuring the member’s land and infrastructure were protected.
Finally, a lengthy three-year suspension of the Farm Quality Assurance Scheme (FQAS) due to an animal welfare conviction was reduced to just six months following the UFU’s appeal, significantly lessening the impact on the farm’s operations.
These cases demonstrate the wide-ranging expertise and tireless advocacy the UFU technical team provides, delivering practical solutions that make a real difference to farmers across Northern Ireland.
