Representatives from The Ulster Farmers’ Union /Young Farmers Club of Ulster Next Generation Committee recently attended a cross-UK union Next Generation Conference, hosted by NFU Scotland. The conference brought together young farmers and industry representatives from across the UK for two days of discussion, and knowledge exchange.
The event provided delegates with the opportunity to hear directly from industry leaders and union representatives on a range of key topics, including agricultural policy developments across the devolved administrations, market opportunities, innovation in farming systems and farmer wellbeing.
Participants also took part in on-farm and educational visits, gaining insight into climate smart livestock production, animal health services and the role of research and technology in supporting productive and sustainable farm businesses.
The event underscored the importance of collaboration between farming unions and the need to ensure that the next generation of farmers is informed, connected, and equipped to meet future challenges.
James McCluggage, Policy and Communications Director at UFU, said, “The conference was extremely worthwhile, and the group found it very useful. It was particularly beneficial to hear how policy is being developed and delivered in the other devolved regions, and to share experiences with young farmers facing many of the same challenges. That wider perspective is invaluable and helps inform how we engage with policy and support structures at home.”
The Next Generation Committee continues to engage with partner organisations across the UK to ensure young farmers in Northern Ireland have access to opportunities for learning, leadership development and policy engagement, strengthening the future of the agri-food industry.
