UFU welcomes protected status for Armagh Bramley apples

The Ulster Farmers’ Union has welcomed the recent announcement that the Armagh Bramley Apple has been granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status under EU law.

UFU President John Thompson said; “The granting of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the EU to the Armagh apple is fantastic news for the Northern Ireland apple industry.

This is an amazing achievement for our growers and I would like to congratulate them on securing this well deserved recognition of the high quality fruit produced in Northern Ireland.

“This is a real boost to the apple industry and there is now the potential for this to be a very lucrative marketing tool leading to increased business and trade for Armagh apple growers.”
