UFU launch lamb price watch

The Ulster Farmers’ Union is now running a weekly lamb price watch (LPW), alongside beef price watch, as requested by the beef and lamb committee.

LPW will outline Northern Ireland base quotes and compare these to the deadweight price paid to farmers by sheep processing plants. Should a price be lower than the previous week, this will be highlighted using shading.

The aim of LPW is to provide a simple layout which shows the direction of trade on a weekly basis. This will help farmers who are not selling regularly, by giving them an idea of the trading situation and they will be able to use this information to their own advantage whether selling directly to a processing plant or through a livestock market.

The LPW will also have benefits for sheep farmers who market lambs through a producer group or co-op group as it will enable them to understand the market trade.

LPW can be found on page 23 of UFU Watch.
