UFU disappointed by drop in lamb prices

The Ulster Farmers’ Union has expressed its disappointment with the recent drop in lamb prices.
UFU Beef and Lamb chairman Robert Davidson said; “Farmers are very disappointed that lamb prices have fallen back in recent weeks with factories currently quoting £5/kg for spring lamb.

This price drop is particularly unwarranted given that spring lambs are expensive to feed, the cost of which has increased substantially this year due to the exceptional bad weather and overall rise in production costs generally.

“The supply chain must show genuine commitment to supporting local producers by offering them a fairer return for their lamb by taking these rising costs of production into account rather than pulling prices at the earliest opportunity.  Spring lamb is a high cost product and as such confidence in the market is needed for producers planning for next year.”
