Progress being made on poultry litter issue

In response to a joint announcement by the Enterprise and Agriculture Ministers earlier this week that eight companies have been awarded contracts for research and development into solutions for the sustainable utilisation of poultry litter, Ulster Farmers’ Union President Harry Sinclair has said that he is pleased to see that progress is being made.

Harry Sinclair said; “The poultry industry needs a long term solution for the disposal of poultry litter, backed by scientific evidence, now that the Rose Energy Project is off the table and it is essential that this is found quickly. While it is frustrating that we have been pushing for a resolution to this issue since 2002 and we are still only at a research and development stage, at least this is progress.

“With the review of our Nitrates Action Programme due to take place soon, it is essential that we have something tangible in place to deal with this issue. The onus is now on the Government to ensure that this happens.”
