UFU relaunches Next Generation Forum

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU), with the support of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU), is relaunching its Next Generation Forum and opening applications for the fourth tranche.

Applications will open on Monday 3 August and close on Friday 28 August 2026.

First established in 2017, the Next Generation Forum provides young farmers and growers under the age of 40 with an opportunity to become more involved in the work of the UFU and help shape the future of Northern Ireland’s agricultural industry.

The forum will have a maximum of 24 representatives and applications are welcomed from both UFU members and non-members. Participants will meet approximately five times throughout the year, with the forum’s agenda and programme shaped by the successful applicants.

UFU policy and communications director James McCluggage said, “The Next Generation Forum gives young farmers and growers a genuine opportunity to have their voices heard and influence the issues that will shape the future of our industry. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals from across all sectors who are passionate about agriculture, willing to share their experiences and keen to develop their knowledge and leadership skills. The direction of the forum will be led by its members.

“Previous programmes have included discussions on agricultural policy, farm finance, business development, leadership, educational visits and engagement with government and industry representatives.  It is also an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people, exchange ideas and learn more about different farming enterprises and food production systems across Northern Ireland.  The agricultural industry is facing significant change, and it is vital that the next generation is involved in the conversations and decisions that will affect their businesses and livelihoods.”

Mr McCluggage added, “I would strongly encourage young farmers and growers, whether they are UFU members or not, to submit an application.”

YFCU President, Kristina Fleming said, “The Next Generation Forum is a fantastic opportunity for young people to have their voices heard and play an active role in shaping the future of agriculture in Northern Ireland.

“At YFCU, we’re passionate about supporting young farmers to develop their confidence, leadership skills and knowledge, and this programme offers a unique opportunity to do just that. I would encourage anyone with an interest in the future of our industry to apply.”
