UFU members taking part in #Farm24

The Ulster Farmers’ Union will show its support for local farming and food production by taking part in the nationwide #Farm24 initiative tomorrow (Thursday, 30 July).

The event, organised by the Farmers Guardian, is geared toward presenting a live day in the life of a farmer, using the power of social media to remind the public of the essential role that local farmers play in feeding the nation and protecting the environment.

Throughout the day, four UFU members will share an insight into their daily work, offering an honest and transparent look at food production and farming practices.

Meet the Ulster Farmers’ Union members who are taking part in #Farm24.

• Ian Buchanan: UFU environment committee chair

Ian Buchanan is a Dungiven hill sheep and dairy farmer. He farms with his two sons and the farm has been in the family since the 1600’s.

He is the UFU environment committee chair was the first NI chair of the British Wool Marketing Board.

• Rebecca Brunt: UFU membership development officer

Rebecca Brunt was raised on a suckler, sheep and dairy farm in Trillick, County Tyrone. She farms with her father, Ian.

Since the age of twelve, Rebecca has been a member of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, representing the organisation on international platforms. Rebecca also has a strong understanding of animal health and welfare issues.

• James Davidson: UFU Next Gen member

Hill farmer James Davison farms in Glenarm in County Antrim, Northern Ireland and his life has always revolved around farming having grown up on his family farm.

James’ farm consists of two broiler houses 2 which hold 35000 each and 300 breeding ewes. He also rears about 3,000 calves a year for ABP alongside his wife and family.  Alongside his farming work, he is part of the UFU Next Generation Group and the Hill Farming Committee.

• Richard Orr: UFU seeds and cereals committee chair

Richard Orr farms cereals and potatoes in Crossgar, County Down, with his wife Sharon and two children, Alfie and Mia.

The fifth-generation potato farmer is also the UFU seeds and cereals committee chair, a cereals and oilseeds sector council member and focuses on soil and plant health. He also keeps a small number of cattle, pigs and sheep.
