Silage competition launched

(L- R) Jonny Agnew (past winner), Alan Boyd (sales director, United Feeds), Lucy Mitchell (UFU commercial, membership and technical director) and Michael Verner (business development advisor, United Feeds).

The Ulster Farmers’ Union and United Feeds have launched its 33rd annual silage competition and are encouraging entries from all members across Northern Ireland. The competition celebrates those that are producing silage to exceptional levels, while also supporting members to improve year on year.

There are four main categories you can enter:

  • Big bale
  • Dairy
  • Beef/sheep
  • Alternative forage

The silage competition also has a newcomer award which is open to all new members entering the competition for the first time and for members who have not entered in the past three years.

UFU president William Irvine, said, “The time to launch our annual silage competition has come around again and we very much look forward to working with United Feeds to make the 2025/2026 competition as successful as the 32 years that came before.

“It’s a positive competition which delivers great benefits for our farming industry here in Northern Ireland, championing the hard work that our farmers are putting in to produce remarkable quality silage and challenging them to raise the bar year after year.

“The production of high quality silage here in Northern Ireland cannot be overlooked and this competition only helps to improve what is already of an exceptional standard.”

The silage competition is a highlight in the UFU calendar and member participation continues to be exceptional. Producing high-quality silage has always been an important part of farming in NI as farmers rely heavily on their ability to grow forage for livestock, even more so with increasing input costs.

To enter, please contact your local group office for more details or register your interest online at www.ufuni.org (events tab). Deadline for entries is Friday 19 December 2025.
