The Ulster Farmers’ Union technical team continues to provide vital support for farmers, securing substantial financial savings and safeguarding members’ rights in a range of challenging situations.
Hedge removal penalty appeal
In one notable case, a member faced a penalty exceeding £20,000 for hedge removal, initially classified as an intentional breach. The UFU technical team intervened, successfully arguing that the breach was negligent rather than intentional. This reclassification resulted in the penalty being reduced by more than £20,000 – a significant financial relief for the farm business.
Water bill reduction
Another member benefited from the team’s expertise in negotiating with Northern Ireland Water (NIW), resulting in a £4,000 reduction on their water bill. The technical officer assisted in securing a leakage allowance, highlighting the practical support the UFU offers in managing operational costs.
Agricultural rate relief on second home
The UFU technical team also helped a member reduce their agricultural rates by successfully arguing that a second home on the farm was eligible for Agricultural Rate Relief. By advocating for a 20% reduction in the property’s assessed value, the team secured a corresponding decrease in the rates payable, easing the financial burden on the farmer.
Inherited herd number retention
In a sensitive case involving succession, the team assisted a family in retaining the existing herd number after the sole member of the business passed away. This ensured continuity for the son and helped preserve the farm’s operational identity.
These cases exemplify the range and impact of the UFU technical team’s work, reinforcing the value of UFU membership for farmers facing regulatory, financial, and operational challenges.
