UFU welcomes EU approval for Official Brucellosis Free (OBF) status

The Ulster Farmers Union has welcomed the European Commission’s decision to approve Northern Ireland’s application for Officially Brucellosis Free (OBF) status.
“Obtaining OBF is a momentous achievement for both farmers and DARD, which has worked hard over the past three years to ensure this disease is kept at bay,” said UFU deputy president Ivor Ferguson. “There have been no confirmed cases of Brucellosis in Northern Ireland since February 2012 and the announcement signifies that the positive work carried out by farmers to date has been worthwhile.”
Now that Northern Ireland has obtained OBF status, it is up to DARD to ensure that further relaxations of Brucellosis controls are put in place. “Back in April the UFU submitted a response to DARD’s consultation on proposals for a revised Brucellosis testing regime should Northern Ireland secure OBF status. Now that we have achieved this, it is up to DARD to ensure rules are relaxed as soon as possible, so that the savings are passed on to farmers,” he said.
