UFU comments on Gorse fires

Following reports of gorse fires taking place in certain areas within Northern Ireland and given the current warm and dry conditions, the Ulster Farmers’ Union is advising farmers to be vigilant at the present time.

UFU president Harry Sinclair said; “Gorse fires can easily get out of control in weather conditions like this and can cause devastation to the land by destroying fences and vegetation whilst also putting the lives of both animals and people in danger. We would therefore encourage  farmers to be particularly vigilant in these circumstances as weather conditions continue to improve.”
The UFU continues to engage with various stakeholders in the development of a Strategic Wildfires Management Plan to prevent the risk of wildfires in Northern Ireland.
