The Ulster Farmers’ Union, along with Winter Barley competition sponsors ORIGIN NI and BASF, is pleased to announce that Richard Kane of the UFU Mid Down Group has been awarded first place in the 2013 UFU Winter Barley Cereal Competition.

A very close second place was awarded to Terry Milligan of the North East Armagh Group, and coming in a respectable third place was Allan Chambers/Neil Patterson  of the Mid Down Group.

The 2013 judges for this year were Ethel White from AFBI, Gerry Kelly from BASF and Ernie Rolestone from ORIGIN NI.

On behalf of the judges Ernie Rolestone from ORIGIN NI said; “We would like to congratulate the entrants on the high quality of the crops produced this year.  The standard was exceptional and all the crops were a credit to the growers involved, especially the winning fields, which combined excellent weed and disease control with overall optimum nutrition and crop uniformity leading to high yield potential.  Management of the crops in this difficult growing season has been remarkably successful and it was difficult identifying and separating the winning fields.

UFU President Harry Sinclair said; “I would like to extend my congratulations to the three finalists and especially to Richard Kane, winner of the winter barley category.  The UFU Cereals Competition recognises the talent of cereal growers in Northern Ireland and all three finalists should be proud to have been selected.”

There is still time for cereal growers to enter the Oats, Winter Wheat, and Spring Barley cereal competition categories for the cereal competition.  If you wish to enter please contact your group manager for details of your local group competition deadline.

The awards for the Winter Barley, Oats, Winter Wheat and Spring Barley cereal competition categories will be officially presented at the 2013 Seeds and Cereals Presentation lunch planned for later this year.
