UFU Watch
The Ulster Farmers’ Union along with Clarendon Agri- Care and Bayer Crop Science, Sponsors of the UFU Cereals Winter Wheat category, have crowned E.Boyes and Sons of the UFU’s South Antrim Group first place in the Winter Wheat category with their winning field of Revelation.
A very close second place was awarded to Jeremy Skelton of the UFU South Tyrone Group, and coming in a respectable third place was Richard Kane of the North West Derry Group.
The judges of the Winter Wheat category this year were Dr Ethel White AFBI, John McKee and Wendy Fearon of Clarendon Agri-Care.
Speaking on behalf of the competition judges, Wendy Fearon of Clarendon Agri- Care said; “We would like to congratulate all those who made it to the final of this year’s competition and on the quality of crops produced. Year on year the UFU cereals Competition goes from strength to strength and this year was no different. The standard of crop was excellent with competition for the top places tight and little separating the top fields.”
UFU deputy president Ivor Ferguson added; “The standard of Winter Wheat crops grown across Northern Ireland, in particular the entries to our prestigious competition is a testament to the expertise we have within the arable industry. I would like to thank our sponsors Clarendon Agri- Care and Bayer Crop Science who continue to enthusiastically support and promote our cereal competitions, the competition judges, our Group Managers who co-ordinate the local competitions, and the many UFU members who entered this year’s Winter Wheat competition.”
The awards ceremony for the winners of the Winter Barley, Oats, Winter Wheat and Spring Barley cereal competition categories will be officially presented at the 2014 Seeds and Cereals Presentation lunch planned for later this year.
