Eradication of BVD

Updated 08/04/2015

The UFU continues to play an active role in the fight to eradicate Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) in Northern Ireland. BVD is a costly production disease and it is in the interest of farmers to tackle it not only because it will improve herd health but because it will also help their businesses to save a substantial amount of money. In 2012, the UFU were instrumental in the development of the BVD eradication programme, which is led by Animal Health and Welfare NI (AHWNI), and 2013 saw the roll out of the first voluntary phase of the project. There is a proposal for the programme to move to a compulsory phase in 2014; however, no Ministerial announcement has been made in relation to this as yet.
