Enniskillen group manager retires

One of the longest serving Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) group managers, Albert McClelland, has retired from the Enniskillen Office after 27 years of service.

Albert was the senior group manager in charge of nine staff and has become well known to the farming community across the Fermanagh area during his career with the UFU and NFU Mutual.

From Brookeborough, Albert has retired after 51 years of working in the insurance and agri industry. He recalls working on Saturdays and during summer holidays in the VG shop in Lisnaskea before his first job with Robert Donaldson’s insurance in Enniskillen.

He then transferred to the former Fermanagh Creameries Factory at Lisnaskea climbing the ranks to office manager and stayed for 20 years before joining the NFU Mutual/UFU office.

Albert recalled a happy career, working with many farmers and their families who attended important UFU meetings. Through the years he has seen some good times in the industry and equally some very dark days such as BSE, Foot and Mouth, and TB.

Working as group manager, Albert says he had to have the skills of an accountant and was a companion. He has missed visiting farms to meet farming families due to COVID-19. Anytime he called to members they welcomed him into their homes and the hospitality was always phenomenal.

Finally, Albert would like to thank everyone for their help and support, especially the office bearers, county committee and group chairmen who have helped make his job so much more enjoyable. He always enjoyed the many trips to European Countries which were well supported.

Albert is looking forward to the opportunity to spend more time with his family in Cheshire, Gareth, Lydia, Theo and Alex.
