Beyond the Farm Gate – Virtual farm tour 2023

Our first virtual farm tour of 2023 kicks off on Thursday 2 February with Randalstown dairy farmer Samuel Hill, to coincide with Februdairy. This is a farm tour with a difference that you won’t want to miss, providing an insight into Samuels’ farming practices.

Samuel is a third-generation farmer. He predominantly farms 400 dairy cattle but also has beef cattle and sheep on the farm. In 2019 he invested in a new dairy parlour going from a 10-point swing over parlour to a 30 point swing over dairy master with a rapid exit.

During the tour, members will also learn about Samuel’s calf rearing process from day one right until they become part of the dairy herd and he will explain his farming set up, including separate yards that cater to the needs of his other cattle. This includes a beef finishing yard, young stalk yard and store cattle yard. Alongside the cattle, Samuel buys 300-400 store lambs yearly to help with grass management over the winter months and with any reseeding that is carried out.
