2019 Sheep conference - Genetics and Grass making a difference to your sheep enterprise

Friday, 6 September, 2019

Further speaker details have been released for the ‘Future Proofing your Sheep Enterprise’ conference, making it a must attend event for all in the sheep industry. The conference will take place on Wednesday 2nd October in Greenmount Campus CAFRE and Thursday 3rd October in Silverbirch Hotel, Omagh.

The organising committee have arranged for Duncan Nelless, former Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year finalist, to give an account of how he is making use of both genetics and grass. Duncan who is based in Northumberland, like farmers here, knows how to produce high quality grass and so he chooses to finish his sheep on grass to make the most of resources available to him within the farmgate.

Along with a focus on grass, Duncan selects ewe replacement lambs based on their maternal estimated breeding values (EBVs). He does this to determine prolificacy along with the animal’s ability to produce and rear lambs up to eight weeks. Alongside using EBVs, Duncan ultrasound scans lambs at 21 weeks to determine superior carcase traits and EID records, to collect figures in a number of different areas including parentage, mortality, assisted lambings and lamb weights at key growth stages.

The market is very challenging at present and with so much uncertainty it is vital that producers use the resources available to them in the most efficient manner. Duncan will be sharing his own experiences of this.
