 Structure

UFU Headquarters, Belfast.

How do we ensure that we accurately represent farmers views?

UFU grass roots members discuss policy issues at their local Group and County meetings.  These are then examined in detail at the Unions Central Committees, before policies are ratified at the UFU's monthly Executive Committee meeting.

The UFU currently operates the following ‘Central Policy Committees’:

Beef and Lamb
Dairy
Legislation
Environment
Rural Development
Rural Enterprise
Vegetables
Seeds and Cereals
Potatoes
Poultry
Pork and Bacon
Mushrooms
Hill Farming
Fruit
Fish
Animal Health and Welfare
Rural Affairs

Some recent results:

  • No bad deal on WTO
  • No costly and bureaucratic Independent Environmental Protection Agency
  • Export refunds for the pig sector
  • Revision of PPS14
  • A highly successful Cut It Out anti-red tape campaign, leading to the introduction of an independent review of bureaucracy
  • £6 million for New Entrants Scheme
  • Funding for the Farm Nutrient Management Scheme
  • A Hybrid Single Farm Payment system, providing flexibility on entitlements
  • 50% subsidy for fallen animals collection
  • Removal of the beef exports ban

TODAY'S MAJOR ISSUES:

  • Raising farm gate prices to offset soaring feed, fuel and fertiliser costs
  • Cutting red tape
  • Simple implementation of the Single Farm Payment and Cross Compliance
  • More public procurement of local produce
  • Compulsory country of origin food labelling
  • Better share of retail prices
